High Performance, Easy Printing...It's World's Best CF!

Proto-pasta's High Performance Carbon Fibre HTPLA-CF combines engineering-grade performance with the ease and environmental-friendliness of PLA printing.  Since kickstarting the World's First 3D Printable Carbon Fibre PLA and our original HTPLA, we've wanted to combine the two for a "super-material".  Why is this material "the best"?
Compared to ABS, PET, and similar Polyester materials, HTPLA-CF has:

  • Easier and more reliable printing
    • No heated bed required
    • Lower processing temperatures, like standard PLA
    • Less warping and distortion when processing
  • More temperature resistance* for maintaining properties to higher temperatures
    • Most ABS, PET, and Polyesters get soft at 80C +/- 10C
    • HTPLA-CF maintains properties up to 120C or more (*when heat treated)
  • Higher strength and better strength-to-weight ratio for stronger parts with less material 
  • Improved surface hardness for less wear in abrasive environments
  • Less shrinkage and distortion for more accurate parts
  • Higher stiffness so parts hold their shape
  • Renewable biopolymer with low odor
    • Highly desirable black finish 


Compared to the Original Carbon Fibre PLA, HTPLA-CF has:

  • Improved toughness for less breaking when handling and easier processing
  • Higher HDT when heat treated for maintaining properties to higher temperatures.

Compared to HTPLA, HTPLA-CF has:

  • Improved surface hardness for less wear in abrasive environments
  • Less shrinkage and distortion for more accurate parts

HTPLA-CF prints easily and can be heat treated for higher temperature performance with a potential Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) in excess of 140C (285F) depending on processing. We had good results when heat treating in an oven at 110C (225F) for an hour. We recommend leaving the supports on your parts, placing them on a non-radiating surface (like glass, ceramic, or composite), and letting them cool in the oven to minimize distortion. Parts must be baked above 60C for any crystallization to occur.

Carbon Fibre is somewhat abrasive, so consider upgrading to a  for less regular maintenance.

In our experience, good results were achieved using standard PLA parameters and standard build surface preparation (blue tape or glue stick). No heated bed required.

Misses the mark

Prints easy, just like normal PLA, but the strength is much lower. This isn't a discussion of ultimate strength vs. yield strength. This stuff is just useless. The classic PLA is stronger, making this not worth the money. If you want to use CF in your parts, I recommend going to ABS CF. I can't use this material in my application with the expectation that it will survive the beating.

Difficult with some extruders and smaller nozzles

I have been testing this filament on a E3D BigBox for quite some while now. I started with direct drive 40Ncm extruder and 0,4mm hardend steel nozzle. This did not work well and seems to partly clog and unclog periodically. Some areas looked perfect then some layers are bad again.

I get this results with the original direct drive and with a Titan upgrade (tested both 13Ncm and 18Ncm motors) with 1:3 reduction for more torque. I still get the same issues as with direct. Some times it seems I got it right then the next time it starts to skip or grind through the filament.

I have tried several times with temperatures from 210 to 250C but I still get the partially clogging.

I am now using a 0,5 hardend steel nozzle.

Just a comment on the info saying this filament is somewhat abrasive. It is very abrasive. I ruined a 0,4 brass nozzle in a few hours print.

I just really want to get this filament to print properly as it looks amazing when it once in a while comes through. The stiffness is incredible.

The best of the best

This is the best filament on the market, the printed parts have excellent strength and finishing.

The carbon fiber material is amazing stuff. Just make sure your printer's nozzle is made for abrasive material. Would buy again.
